"Prior to meeting the guy I thought he was engaged in some elaborate Exit-Through-The-Gift-Shop hoax at the expense of the notoriously stupid Jalopnik commentariat."

I loled. Decent read though.

Good article, except Baruth's still the insufferable asshole that we've known about for all these years.

That was a great movie, if it was a movie.

Just imagine if it wasn't a Toyota!

Project cars are a hobby. If you rely on your hobby for primary transportation, or can't afford your hobby, you're going to have a bad time.

This is why the correct solution is a $15,000 Maserati and a $2000 Accord.

Good point! Get 2 types of cheap transportation - one for fun, and one for the rest of the time.

I'm not sure what it is so many people don't like about him, but I'm not really all that concerned. I haven't read all of his stuff, but most of what I have read was interesting.

I don't really care if he's actually an asshole or not, because on the Internet, no-one knows you're a dog... or something.

Some sample headlines that could never happen in real life:

Matt Farah just bought a 900,000 mile Mitsubishi Starion

Matt Farah just bought a 900,000 mile VW GTI MkIV

Matt Farah just bought a 900,000 mile early-90's Ford Fiesta

Matt Farah just bought a 900,000 mile sideshow pony from a failing circus

If it hadn't been a Toyota we likely wouldn't even have this story to discuss!

Ha! I love Tavarish, but this is hilarious.

Spends $1500 on repairs, doesn't buy hood struts.

He doxxed a Jalopnik commenter in the comment section several years back, putting up his facebook page, and names of relatives and the like. All because the commenter disagreed with him and called him out on shoddy journalism.

I did not dox him, I contacted him personally, there's a difference.

By posting his private information and photos in the public forum? You have an interesting way of remembering it. Don't pull this burner shit, I was there.

I never used his name. If you can identify who he was from what I posted, you're a wizard.

And if you were there, you'll remember that what he actually did was try to cyberbully me by saying "Five bucks that Baruth doesn't have the guts to show up here." Well, I showed up, and I wanted my five dollars

I treat the Internet like real life, because I use my real name here and I communicate openly and honestly with people. I don't have much patience for people who don't do the same. Yes, anonymity is vital to the freedom of the Web, but if you decide you want to make a five-dollar bet with me *anonymously*, don't be surprised if I decide to find you and collect my money.

And the "burner shit" is because my actual ID is used by R&T now to post articles, and I no longer have the credentials to it. If you want me to prove I'm me, I can do it. I don't hide behind aliases.

You can justify it however you like, but you're a public figure, and he wasn't. If you put your name and face out on the internet, that's your own career choice. Many people (myself included) do not have or want to have an internet career and jealously protect our online identities. You crossed a line that should not have been touched, and several years later, you're still feebly holding on to the idea that it was the right thing to do. Betting five bucks on your willingness to answer his complaint is not cyber bullying. Pulling up his real-life info and putting it in the forum may not be exactly cyber bullying, but it's a hell of a lot closer, not to mention horribly unprofessional and petulant. You're apparently the only person that never made a joke wager in their life.

You're misstating the facts. It was impossible to identify him positively from what I posted. The purpose of what I posted was to let him know that I know who he was.

I called him and we discussed it. That's how human beings are supposed to interact, not by flinging shit at each other from a distance behind a wall.

As you may recall, he and I actually had something in common; we both had a family member dying of sarcoidosis. As a result of that and a few other things, we were able to come to an understanding.

Furthermore, it wasn't just a joke bet; when I showed up and called him on it he maintained his tough-guy/bully persona right until the moment his phone rang. Are you totally certain that you, personally, sanction and stand behind stuff like that? Yeah, I suppose there's no harm in trying to bully me or make me feel terrible about myself —- I'm above sympathy or humanity in your eyes for some reason —- but what about all the people who don't have this Skin Of Steel(tm)?

It doesn't matter if you said his name or not, you divulged personal information that should have never seen the light of day in that forum. That I may recall that you both have had a family member dying from the same obscure disease is pretty clear evidence that something went too far. Why did you think that was important to know about him? And why should I now know it? Your and his private family disease history is not now, nor never was my business. Why would you dredge that up? There is no possible explanation that doesn't involve capriciousness. That's personal information that should have never been posted on an internet forum without the full consent of the people involved. People on the internet are mean, I get it. You're a public figure as I said, grow some skin. Are you really so thin skinned that you can't handle idle internet anger from someone you never met and never need meet? It's 5 dollars and some criticism. Clearly the skin is still not so steely as you would wish everyone to think. He may have taken things a step far, but your subsequent actions took things far beyond necessary.

"It doesn't matter if you said his name or not, you divulged personal information that should have never seen the light of day in that forum."

So how'd I figure out who he was? Because I hacked Jalopnik? Because I called Ray Wert and *he* told me? Of course not. He had already said enough about himself that anybody with any sense could figure out who he was.

I get that you disagree with what I did. We'll just have to be content sitting on opposite sides of the accountability discussion. But for you to call it "doxxing" is ridiculous. "Doxxing" is when you put up a picture of your car on the Internet and somebody responds by putting your SSN and the address of your child's school up. That's "doxxing". Calling someone out on their attempt to call *me* out isn't doxxing. You're willfully expanding the term to mean something it doesn't mean.

Lexus hood struts are probably super expensive, yo! How much did a broken broom handle from a dumpster cost? ZERO DOLLARS!

How else did you think Tavarish makes those car flips so successful?
